About Me

Background

image15

I remembered when I was a kid, when my parents put a pencil and paper in front of memy favorite time of day was when I was drawing, painting and of course taking things apart and building something new. As I got older, this love never faded and eventually lead me to the Entertainment Industry. It taught me the necessary skills and techniques to bring Concept to Reality.

Working in to Entertainment Industry and Stop Motion Animation for a good 2 decades I've gathered a well rounded set of skills to see a project through from concept phase to a finish product. A lot of projects require on the fly and real world problem solving. Others show you material limitations and when it comes to quantity, straight diligence keeps you going to the very end. One thing about problem solving and pipelines, if you can anticipate workflow, you can prep your work for the next person down the line and that can save a lot of time and money.

One of the most important thing about this Industry and most others, is that your working on a team of really talented and highly skilled individuals. No one can do it all, well you can, but it will take a very very long time. Delegation is the key my dear Watson. As a whole, great many things can be built and discovered.

I've organized my scope of work to different categories or projects.

Mediums

image16

Working in many different types on mediums, such as model making, miniature set building, composites, furniture design, and dimensional sculpting helps to see a different perspectives and find multiple solutions. I believe that working in a single medium is quite restrictive to my artistic process. Each idea manifests in its own individual style and form.

Techniques

To achieve a certain look or style, you need to use the right tools and techniques for the job at hand. If you're interested in seeing some behind the scenes or how to build some props or miniatures, check out my blog for some tricks of the trade.

A Certain Set of Skills

Conceptual Design to Prototypes

Drawing on a napkin theory is a power process. Being handed a loose drawing and then coming up with a concept, drafting out a design, to being able to execute a prototype is a powerful pipeline.

Miniature Model Making n' Set Design

Working in the Stop Motion Animation Industry gives you powerful insight into World Building. 1/6" scale is a perfect size to fit a whole shot on stage. The only exception is, you got to make everything, yes.

Fabrication

It's one thing to only make one, it's a whole different pipeline to make many. Fabrication involves template, jigs, assembly lines and repeatability.

Give me a pad of paper, some markers and a ball point pen and I'll frame a moment in time.

In the beginning, one's conceptual mind is very blurry until you start to focus on curtain areas of interest.  When you journey from the begin of first thought, you got to push pause on your VCR and walk around then start to focus onto a design.

Concept n' Design

In the initial phase, concept and design work lays a good foundation to fabrication.

Props

image24

Cool thing about Props, it's like Product Design. You go through the whole pipeline to get to the final piece. Prop building involves all aspects fabrication and design. From hero pieces to background work, it's another piece of the puzzle.

Stop Motion Sets

The world of miniature building is my favorite. Perfect scale to work in.

Scaled Projects

image26

World building is a wonderful process. If you make it just right, you can immerse your audience into a whole new experience.

Art Installations

image27

With installations, you're able to transform a space to anything you like. From a commission piece to a whole wall or a whole space. Bring a theme to life. It gives you a up close and personal experience unlike film or TV you get to walk through the artwork and feel the moment.

Functional Displays

Form and Function. The keys to a great display.

Digital to Real World

image29

Some projects start out in the digital world and others finish in the real world. 3D Printing, CAM/CNC, Laser and water cutting and composites bring life to a project.

Costume Fabrication

Working on Costumes requires a certain set of specific skills and a good team. Your not just making one your building an army of
